TLX vs. Sonata | Battle of the everyday drivers

One might balk at the thought of comparing an Acura with a Hyundai, but we are choosing to ponder the idea with intrigue. We attended the official launches of these two mid-size sedans months ago, but getting extra seat time in them solidified both as being worthy competitors. Let’s take a look at exactly how the Acura TLX (with Tech) stacks up against the Hyundai Sonata 2.0T – both of which come in around the $35,000 mark.

The Sonata has vastly improved over outgoing models. It’s sleek, well-built (in America BTW) and fuel-efficient. It’s a very practical car that has just enough of the technology bells and whistles to keep the young-ins satisfied, not to mention it balances good styling with impressive handling.

The Acura TLX is similarly satisfying (and also built in USA). It takes turns like a pro, sips the gas, and provides all the most important creature comforts within the mid-30’s price range.

Did we mention both have exquisite design for the money? We found that both Hyundai and Acura really took the time to develop these new-for-2015 models.

So how could someone choose between the two? Here’s what it comes down to – what is most important to you as a driver…as a car buyer? If it’s price, then the two are well matched. If it’s reliability, then you’re stuck as well. The TLX and Sonata compare very closely in most areas.

We found that what would be considered a pro for one vehicle could be a con for the other. That’s why we put together this handy chart to break it down for the readers.

After reviewing the chart, which would you pick? Are you a TLX or Sonata driver?

So which is it? The Acura or the Hyundai? It’s the answer you don’t want to hear. Overall, consumers can’t go wrong with either the 2015 Acura TLX or the 2015 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T. Both vehicles make excellent daily companions-they are fuel efficient, good-looking, easy to drive, and different than the stock Japanese mid-size sedan option your neighbor bought.

If you forced us to pick, and we thought you might do that, then we’d pick the Acura. Why? Because it’s different. While the Hyundai is an incredible car with a lot of bang for your buck, the Acura stands out more for us in the design and performance departments. We’ve grown a bit tired of the ubiquitous “guppy” grille, and while the boomerang grille isn’t our favorite, it’s not a gaping black plastic hole from headlamp to headlamp.
