Installing a short shifter offers extra efficiency to a vehicle especially it plays a vital role in the racing world, where time matters a lot. Normally adding a short shifter can significantly get better the ¼ mile times, thus it is very important. Here we will consider the vehicle, 1992 Honda Civic, although the process remains same for the majority vehicles.

The necessary things you will need during this procedure include:
- 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
- Open-end wrench set
- Jack
- Short shifter kit
- Jack stands
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Channel locks
Step 1:
Firstly twist the shift knob in anticlockwise direction to take it out, and put it to one side.
Step 2:
Now use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the center console from the vehicle. There are numerous screws along the border of the console, and after removing all of them you can easily put separate the console.
Step 3:
Next remove the weather seal that circles around the shifter and do it all with your hands. A weather seal is a rubber piece that closes to the lip on body edge, so try to work around it from the outside, and after that lift it off the shifter.
Step 4:
Now jack up the vehicle by means of the jack, and position it on jack stands. Verify that it is safe to go underneath it.
Step 5:
Position the shifter linkage. Normally there are two bolts that make safe the shifter to the vehicle; so take out them through the 3/8-inch ratchet.
Step 6:
Now track the linkage in the direction of the transmission, and use an open-end wrench and 3/8-inch ratchet to get rid of the bolt that secures the shifter linkage to the transmission.
Step 7:
Next unbolt the shifter from the linkage. Here the open-end wrench and the 3/8-inch ratchet will probably help you.
Step 8:
Take away the shifter from the vehicle and put it on the surface.
Step 9:
At this moment use the 3/8-inch ratchet and channel locks to unbolt the shifter from the mount at the base. You will find it at the ball and pivot of the shifter.
Step 10:
Now apply the shifter lubricant with your hands to the pivot point on the new shifter. If it does not lubricate enough as required then you can use white lithium grease in this case.
Step 11:
Now put the new shifter in the pivot retainer.
Step 12:
Install the new shifter in the reverse order of its removal.
