It is day four of the New Year. If you haven’t already broken that 2011 resolution, then, like me, you must not have begun it yet. Each December 31st when the clock strikes midnight we ring in a new beginning. Most of us make promises to ourselves to improve our health and rid of bad habits. Some of us avoid making resolutions altogether because we know we can’t keep them. But I’m here to ask you about a resolution that has nothing to do with your weight or diet.Are you planning to buy a new or used (i.e. “new to you”) car in 2011? If so, then it’s time to determine your new “car” resolution. Whether you’ll be shopping for a brand-new car off the dealership lot or looking for a privately owned used vehicle, I encourage you to answer these 10 questions before embarking on your car-buying journey:

- What function does my next vehicle need to serve for me and/or my family?
- What do I want my next car to “say” about me?
- Do I want a coupe, sedan, wagon, minivan, crossover, SUV, or truck?
- Do I prefer domestic or international brands or neither?
- How many people will I likely be toting around, and how often will I have passengers?
- How long do I plan to own my next vehicle?
- What is my total/monthly budget?
- What can I afford to put down on the next car?
- Should I buy a new, used, or certified pre-owned (CPO) car?
- Will I trade in my current vehicle or sell it privately?
