It is quite simple procedure to rebuild your brake system’s leaking wheel cylinders and it provide your vehicle with a better performance as well. Avoid using a brake cylinder hone on an aluminum wheel cylinder; because these parts have an anodized finish to put off corrosion and it could be smashed up at some point in the honing process. On the other hand you can use a dismissively rough hand pad (where Scotch-Brite is a best option) along with warm soapy water. Let see how to rebuild brake cylinders.

Things you’ll need:

You will probably require the following things:

  • Warm soapy water
  • Lightly abrasive hand pad, such as Scotch-Brite (not steel wool)
  • Brake parts cleaner
  • Cylinder rebuild kits
  • Brake fluid
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Cylinder hone
  • Scrub brush

Step 1:

First of all, remove the dust boots on each end to separate the wheel cylinder, plus pull the pistons, cup seals and spreader around the cylinder ends.

Step 2:

Put aside the spreader spring as well as cup seals, as you will find them in rebuild kit.

Step 3:

Next make clean the aluminum cylinder bore by using warm soapy water along with a lightly abrasive hand pad (avoid steel wool). And then finally clean it with a can of brake parts cleaner and afterward make it dry with a lint-free cloth.

Step 4:

Now, to get rid of any heavy rust and accumulated substance you have to hone out the cast iron or else steel housing. After that you will obtain a smooth bore with a nice pattern. Now take a brake parts cleaner and use it to clean the external housing and employ a scrub brush to take away brake dust.

Step 5:

After that rub the aluminum wheel cylinder pistons, with warm soapy water, then let it dry. Making these parts clean will avoid problems later on throughout its reassembly and usage.

Step 6:

Now it is time to reassemble, for this course put the spreader spring in the cylinder. Then use brake fluid to lubricate the cup seals. Put in them even side out and pushed in beside the spreader spring. This will prevent them from failing or else spinning in the bore

Step 7:

Now put a piston in each side of the cylinder and mount them flat side in touching the flat side of the seal.

Step 8:

Cautiously mount one dust boot side by draping the large end in the region of the recess in the cylinder housing until it broadens as well as slips into the place. Afterwards perform the same procedure with the other end until it slips into place.

Step 9:

Try to slide the pistons backward and forward in the bore to center them; and then verify that they are placed accurately.
