The Latest VW Golf GTI and Golf R Raise an Already Impressive Bar

New infotainment systemNo manual transmission
Fun to driveHarsh ride on 19-inch wheels
Punchy powertrainOnly 25–27 mpg combined

The 2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R arrive with a midcycle refresh that goes beyond minor tweaks. Volkswagen listened to feedback and introduced meaningful upgrades, including sharper tech, smarter driver-assistance systems, and subtle styling changes that keep the hot hatch looking modern while adding a touch of maturity.

The highlight is the new 12.9-inch touchscreen paired with an updated infotainment system—a significant improvement over the previous setup. In our experience with the 2023 GTI’s 8.25-inch display, the smaller screen often frustrated, and the software was cumbersome. Now, the 2025 model offers a clean, intuitive interface with crisp graphics, finally giving the car a screen worthy of its performance. Minor annoyances remain, like the absence of a traditional volume knob and touch-only climate controls, but the overall upgrade feels transformative.

Another smart update is the return of traditional steering wheel buttons on the GTI, replacing finicky haptic controls, though the Golf R still retains the latter. Both models gain practical enhancements such as four USB-C ports—two at the front, two in the rear. The exterior also receives refreshed headlights, redesigned bumpers, and a slightly longer wheelbase, giving both models a more contemporary stance.

Under the hood, changes are subtle yet significant. The Golf R now produces 328 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque—an increase of 13 hp—while maintaining its reliable all-wheel-drive system. The GTI keeps 241 hp and 273 lb-ft delivered to the front wheels. U.S. buyers lose the six-speed manual option; all 2025 GTIs and Rs now come with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Even without the manual, the latest GTI and Golf R impress. Judges praised their sharp handling, strong acceleration, and the lightning-fast dual-clutch shifts, though the ride can feel firm on 19-inch wheels. “The GTI thrives even without a manual,” said deputy editor Alexander Stoklosa. “The dual-clutch behaves perfectly, and manual mode is sublime.”

The Golf succeeds where it counts. Its instantly recognizable silhouette is updated without losing character, and interior tech finally feels contemporary. On roads and tracks alike, engineering excellence shines through with precise handling and confidence-inspiring control. Adaptive safety features are now standard, and the GTI received new tech for only a modest price increase. Fuel efficiency is not its strong suit—27 mpg combined for the GTI and 25 mpg for the R—but performance is the main attraction.

Whether the Golf can secure MotorTrend’s Car of the Year title for a third time is yet to be seen. This review was part of our 2026 Car of the Year testing, where vehicles are evaluated on efficiency, design, safety, engineering, value, and intended performance. Eligible cars must be all-new or significantly updated.
