Citroen released full details and pricing of the new DS4 hatchback for the British market.

The gorgeous new car will first make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and will then go on sale in Britain starting at £18,150. The car comes with five engines, three petrol and two diesel, and three trim levels.

The DS4 is very well equipped and comes with refined, fuel efficient engines. It also has a reasonable price. What sets it apart from the rest of the cars in this segment though is that fantastic Citroen charm exclusive to the DS range, which makes is just a plain desirable car. If you are bored with ordinary Korean and even German hatchbacks, this French beauty might be able to shake things off for you.

That said, its artistic design can sometimes get a bit overwhelming!

PRICING & AVAILABILITY

The DS4 range starts at just £18,150 for the VTi 120 manual DSign.  The range-topping petrol THP 200 6-speed manual DSport is priced at £23,650.  Alternatively, the HDi 160 6-speed manual DSport is priced at £23,950.

Customers can pre-order now, with first deliveries from the official ‘on sale’ date of 4 July 2011.

BOLD DESIGN

An example of truly creative design, DS4 blends a mix of the most desirable styling references to create a bold and exciting new proposition.

DS4’s compact body – 4.27m (l), 1.81m (w) & 1.53m (h) – combines a raised stance with the dramatic, flowing lines of a coupé.  Together, they portray energy, power and presence.

A stand-out design, the sweeping side profile is accentuated by glossy black finishes, dark tinted windows and a waistline detailed in sporty chrome.  The sculpted wheel arches add definition to the large alloy wheels (up to 19”). The taut roofline draws the eyes up and over to the spoiler and to the imposing rear with its Crossover-style chrome lower bumper insert.

Either side of the front bumper features distinctive ‘always on’ boomerang-shaped light signatures. Coupled with similar light guides incorporated in the rear light clusters, DS4 attracts attention both night and day.  Wide chrome chevrons straddle the top of the large grille and a jewel-like DS emblem is positioned on the bonnet, completing the car’s truly outstanding look.

DS4’s dynamic appearance can be made even sportier and individual thanks to the optional style packs, which can be combined with the black or pearlescent white body colours.  The ‘Dark Chrome Signature’ packs bring matt Shark Grey highlights to the rear spoiler, front bumper, fog light surrounds and side rubbing strips.  Black chrome on the front chevrons, lower front grille surround, side rubbing strips and rear bumper insert are also included.  The door mirrors are finished in a flattering crystal chrome finish, completing the distinctive upgrade.

ELEGANTLY APPOINTED

Stepping inside the spacious cockpit, occupants are immediately aware of the attention to detail given to the interior. Finely crafted and intelligently designed, DS4 offers a sophisticated cabin environment.

There are touches of luxury throughout such as the chrome detailing on the air vent surrounds, instrument cluster, gear lever and centre console.  Sporty aluminium drilled pedals, embossed leather door handles and stylish ambient lighting are also available.  The high-quality, soft-touch one-piece dashboard also has a superbly tactile feel.

Drivers feel instinctively connected with DS4.  All the instruments and controls are within easy sight and reach.  The driving position is both enveloping and ergonomically optimised.  The figure-hugging front seats, finished in the finest leather, are cushioning and supportive.

Fusing analogue dials with digital displays, the three instrument binnacles provide a distinctive and contemporary visual array of driver information.  The speedometer needle moves around the central binnacle instead of sitting at its centre.  The colour and brightness of the light from the instrument display can also be changed to suit the user’s preference.

Dominating DS4’s cabin is an expansive panoramic windscreen that extends high over the heads of the front occupants.  Offering 45° of upward vision, this large glazed area combines with DS4’s raised stance to provide commanding views for the driver and a bright, yet intimate cabin environment, for passengers.  Front occupants can shield themselves from glare by pulling down individual sliding sun blinds – each equipped with a courtesy mirror.

The interior lighting has also been fine-tuned to deliver an atmosphere of luxury.  For example, the sensors that run down the panoramic windscreen to power the automatic windscreen wipers (DStyle trim level onwards) incorporate a strip of LEDs to create a distinctive mood lighting feature.  The illumination of the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel can be customised, from cool white to incandescent blue.

Contributing to the refined and serene atmosphere onboard,special attention has been given to the car’s internal acoustics.  DS4’s meticulous soundproofing has been engineered to match the acoustics found in larger executive saloon models.  Sound insulation is enhanced under the bonnet to reduce engine noise and vibration.  The windscreen has been laminated with damping film.  The floor is fitted with special soundproofing elements and the doors have all been fitted with enhanced sealing barriers.  The whole cabin structure has been sprayed with a special damping solution and adjoining components have been carefully examined to reduce friction.  Mechanical sounds such as the operation of the air conditioning or automatic parking brake have also been minimised.

DS4 offers owners a choice of six different upholsteries, with five high-end leather finishes to rival the best in the class. All DStyle versions are fitted with part-leather seats, whilst DSport models enjoy full leather Mistral ‘Claudia’ upholstery as standard.  Two optional two-tone, full leather packs are also available, with a choice of either Mistral & Red or Mistral & White leather seats. The packs also bring matching elements of décor including red or white trimmed door armrests and DS-embossed leather door handles.

Most models are available with high quality Habana ‘Club’ upholstery and trim.  Boasting a truly distinctive finish, the centre section of the supportive front seats features a ‘Bracelet’ design, evoking the links of a watchstrap.

For the ultimate in driving luxury, the front seats are available with a massage function, together with electric lumbar adjustment.

INTELLIGENT VERSATILITY

Abandoning the well-worn paths taken by ordinary coupés, DS4 is a ground-breaking, high-stance 5-door coupé that is true to the DS vision of boldness and distinction in design.

Blending seamlessly with the coupé body shape, the unique rear doors are virtually invisible from the exterior.  These elegantly styled doors – seamlessly integrated into the exterior body lines – feature handles hidden in the doorframes.  This optimised design allows the front doors of DS4 to be shorter and lighter, escapingthe inconvenient accessibility of standard coupés, with their long, heavy front doors and fold-down front seats.

Versatile and convenient, DS4 boasts a capacious 359 litre boot that can be expanded to 385 litres (VDA) using the under floor storage.  This is similar in volume to that of many larger, conventional hatchbacks.  The split/folding rear seats can easily be tumbled forward, creating load space up to the front seats.

There are numerous convenient storage compartments, including door pockets big enough for 1.5-litre bottles and drawers under the front seats.

The intelligent architecture of the high-level centre console (available on models fitted with EGS) also provides spacious storage areas.  The largest of these – which is cooled, illuminated and protected by a sliding cover – can hold up to four 50-cl bottles and houses a connectivity area with a USB port and a 12-volt socket.

CRÉATIVE TECHNOLOGIE ONBOARD

Beyond its distinctive styling and dynamic performance, DS4’s cabin boasts an array of ‘Créative Technologie’, providing equipment functionality and innovative features for first-class travelling comfort and ultimate convenience.

A driving experience tailored to the individual’s preferences, users can select their own onboard ambience from four polyphonic sound themes – Classic, Crystal Symphony, Jungle Fantasy & Urban Rythmik – for the various vehicle alerts and reminders.  The colours of the stylish instrument panel can also be customised, spanning from white to blue.

To alter the cabin environment, users can select the intensity of the automatic dual-zone air conditioning from three flow levels – Light, Medium & Strong – with a REST function maintaining ventilation in the cabin for up to eight minutes after the engine is switched off.

DS4 is fitted with a ‘surround sound’ audio system as standard, which features processing software for effective soundscaping.  This distributes sound evenly throughout the cabin.  In addition, Citroën and DENON^® have developed a premium HiFi option that includes four specially developed woofers, four tweeters, a digital amplifier and a sub-woofer in the boot.

A USB port, 3.5mm jack plug and 12V socket are available on the centre console for connecting, listening to and charging a range of electronic devices.  Most models also feature an additional 12V port and removable torch in the boot.

DS4 can be equipped with eMyWay, Citroën’s integrated new-generation navigation system. eMyWay features a high-resolution colour display, GPS satellite navigation, speed limit display, USB connectivity for MP3 players and Bluetooth^® for hands-free calls and audio streaming from mobile phones.

Front and rear parking sensors are available, together with parking space ‘gap’ measurement, electric folding and heated door mirrors, an automatic electric parking brake and Hill Start Assist – all making DS4 even more convenient to live with.

Drivers can access all key driving and comfort controls – which are clearly visible and backlit for night-time use – without taking their hands off the multi-function steering wheel.

EXPERT CONTROL

Citroën is renowned both for extremely smooth, comfortable road manners and also the invigorating road-holding and handling that continues to dominate the World Rally Championship. DS4 brings together Citroën’s most celebrated characteristics to deliver exemplary control, giving drivers comfort and command of the road with an involved driving experience.

“We wanted drivers to feel like they have the road at the tips of their fingers” – Jérémie Maestracci, Project Manager for DS4. Engineered to be highly responsive, DS4 is sporty and fun, yet smooth and comfortable.  Citroën has built upon its expertise in creating the most civilised suspension set-ups and also the recent experience in the development of DS3 Racing.

Fitted with a MacPherson type suspension assembly at the front, a flexible transverse beam at the rear and hydraulic steering with an electric pump, the platform is tailored for the distinctive set-up of DS4.

Riding on large alloy wheels – up to 19” in diameter – DS4 maintains a distinctive relationship with the road. The raised vantage point also gives drivers a feeling of confidence and the control to shrug off obstacles.

Depending on trim level, DS4 is fitted with large diameter 340mm ventilated front disc brakes, with 290mm discs at the rear.  ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) is standard specification.  Ensuring optimal vehicle control in the most demanding driving situations, DS4 also features standard ESP with Intelligent Traction Control.

POWER

Delivering exceptional performance with environmental responsibility, DS4 is offered with a choice of five refined and highly efficient Euro 5 engines, which deliver up to 64.2mpg combined cycle fuel economy and CO₂ emissions from as little as 114g/km.

The three petrol powerplants – VTi 120, THP 155 and a new THP 200 – were all co-developed with BMW.

The engaging THP 200 delivers enjoyable performance with a top speed of 146mph and 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds.  The maximum power output is 147kW and torque is plentiful with 275Nm at 1,700rpm.  The engine is also designed to be fuel and CO₂ efficient, returning a class-leading economy of 44.1mpg over a combined cycle and emissions of just 149g/km.

Two diesel engines – HDi 110 and HDi 160 – are fitted with Citroën’s Diesel Particulate Filter System, which virtually eliminates particle emissions.  The HDi 110 is available from launch as an e-HDi version with second generation Stop & Start.

• The THP 155 & e-HDi 110 are both mated to 6-speed EGS (Electronic Gearbox System) gearboxes.
• The VTi 120, THP 200, HDi 110 & HDi 160 are mated to 5 or 6-speed manual ‘boxes.

Most manual models are fitted with a Gear Efficiency Indicator (GEI) and the 6-speed EGS transmission has an ‘Auto’ setting that delivers lower fuel consumption than an equivalent manual transmission.

e-HDi

Citroën’s innovative micro-hybrid technology boosts fuel economy by up to 15% in city driving conditions and reduces CO₂ emissions to just 114g/km on the e-HDi 110 version of DS4.

The e-HDi powertrain consists of an efficient Euro 5 HDi diesel engine fitted with a second generation Stop & Start system that puts the engine into standby mode when the car is stationary.  Featuring a reversible alternator and an e-booster function, the system allows instantaneous and whisper silent engine restarts.  The electronically controlled alternator also uses regenerative braking to recover energy.  The system even stops the engine before the vehicle comes to a complete halt and operates effectively in temperatures as low as -5°C.  All required features such as the radio, air-conditioning and steering functions remain in operation when the engine is stopped by the system.

ENVIRONMENTALLY EFFICIENT ENGINEERING

DS4 was designed from the start to have a reduced environmental footprint.  This is especially evident in its construction by using top-quality components that are considerately sourced.  An ecologically focused manufacturing process means around 15% of the 200kg of the polymers and plastics used in DS4 are derived from ‘green materials’.  These fall into three separate groups – biomaterials (polymers made from renewable resources, rather than petrochemicals), natural materials (e.g. plant fibres) and recycled plastics.

SAFETY

DS4 achieves the highest standards of protection for its occupants and has already been awarded the maximum 5-star rating by independent assessors Euro NCAP.

One of the safest cars on the road today, DS4’s reinforced cabin structure integrates a range of standard safety features including six airbags and two Isofix child seat mounting points on the rear seats.

For complete peace-of-mind, DS4 is also equipped with a range of other safety enhancing technologies:

• Citroën’s award-winning eTouch Emergency & Assistance system, which automatically or manually makes geo-localised emergency or assistance calls using a built-in SIM card, for rapid intervention in the event of an accident or if the car is immobilised.
• A cornering light function that provides an extra beam that increases visibility when turning – by up to 75° to the left and right of the vehicle.  The lights automatically illuminate when the driver indicates or turns the wheel to an angle of more than 60°.
• A blind-spot monitoring system.  Based on the same technology as the parking sensors, four ultrasound sensors alert the driver if a vehicle is in their blind-spot (an area stretching to around 5m behind the rear bumper and 3.5m from each side of the car).  The driver is notified by means of a pictogram displayed in the door mirrors.
• Programmable cruise control with speed limiter that allows drivers to pre-set up to five favourite cruising and top speeds, for added safety and convenience on the open road.

TRIMS

Citroën’s new DS4 is available with three trim-level signatures – DSign, DStyle and DSport.

The entry-level DSign comes generously equipped, including six airbags, ESP, Hill Start Assist, air conditioning, daytime-running LEDs, 17” alloy wheels, front fog lights with cornering function, six-speaker Surround Sound audio system and cruise control with speed limiter and memory settings.

At the heart of the range, DStyle models add key equipment such as 18” alloy wheels, automatic windscreen wipers and headlamps, front sports seats with electric lumbar adjustment and massage function, part-leather upholstery, automatic digital air conditioning, aluminium drilled pedals, rear parking sensors and the eTouch Emergency & Assistance System.

For a the ultimate DS4 driving experience, DSport adds front heated seats, full leather upholstery, 19” alloy wheels, front parking sensors with ‘gap’ measurement system, blind-spot monitoring system and enhanced exterior detailing.
